Check the ingredients in your makeup! Anything you put on your skin should pass your most stringent quality test.  Especially now that you’re pregnant, you cannot risk anything that can be absorbed or breathed in, into your bloodstream, and passed on to your growing baby.

Some of the most toxic items can be found in your kikay kit. Take the time to know what to keep and what to toss, and what the best alternatives are for you.

In fact, pregnant or otherwise, cleaning up your beauty routine is always good to do!

The NO list

At no point should you be exposed to toxic chemicals, most especially if you are trying to conceive and if you are already pregnant. These have significant and long-lasting effects on reproductive health and can lead to problems like infertility, low birth weight, and preterm birth.

You should also know that there are some ingredients you need to stay away from now that you’re pregnant. These might have been part of your routine before but will now harm your growing baby. You should avoid antiaging products with vitamin A (too much could potentially lead to birth defects), skin-lightening products (interfere with the development of a fetus's skin), and some prescription skincare items. Always consult with your ob-gyn about anything you consume or put on your body.

Here’s a quick guide of ingredients to avoid:

• Retinyl palmitate and Retinol (vitamin A)

• Phthalates

• Parabens

• Dibutyl phthalate

• Triclosan

• BP-3

• Bisphenol A (BPA)

• BHA and BHT

• Dioxin

• Oxybenzone

• Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA)

• Diazolidinyl urea

• Phenylmercuric salts, acetate, nitrate

• Hydroquinone or glutathione

• Fragrance/parfum

What’s safe

Be critical about labels like “organic” or “natural” or “pure” as there’s no way to really tell what they mean or if they are safe for you and your unborn child. Instead look for labels that certify it to be free from dangerous ingredients. Opt for assurances like:

• Fragrance-free

• BPA-free

• No parabens

• No phthalates

• No DEA

Again, when in doubt, talk to your doctor. You can also see what makes it on the environmental watch lists. Just remember, when it comes to your things you put in and on your body, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
